        What is BpiFrance?

BpiFrance is a French public institution dedicated to financing and supporting businesses. As an investment bank, it offers a variety of financial products to help businesses at every stage of their development, from startup to growth. BpiFrance plays an important role in financing innovation in France. It offers innovation loans to support projects for the development of new products or services, as well as equity investments for innovative companies with high growth potential. BpiFrance also provides a range of advisory services to help businesses maximize their innovation potential.

        What is innovation financing?

Innovation financing refers to all the financial resources made available to companies to develop and implement innovative ideas, products, services, or methods. Without capital, an idea—no matter how innovative—cannot be developed. This form of financing is therefore essential for enabling companies to stand out from the competition and drive their growth.

How can you finance an innovative project?

To finance an innovative project, it is essential to choose the appropriate financing method based on the stage of development and the type of innovation. Among the most common options are: Self-financing: the entrepreneur uses personal resources to launch the project. This is generally the first step in testing the viability of the innovation. Equity capital: this can come from personal savings, “love money” (funds from family or friends), or contributions from external partners. Public aid: this can take various forms (grants, low-interest loans, tax credits) and be sought at different stages of the project’s development. Crowdfunding: this involves raising funds from a large number of people through online platforms. Private investments: these can come from business angels, venture capital funds, or companies.

What are the main sources of funding?

The main sources of funding for innovation can be grouped into three broad categories. Public funding: This includes grants, low-interest loans, and tax credits such as the Research Tax Credit (CIR). Numerous innovation support programs are implemented by public institutions at various levels: local, regional, and national. Examples include the France 2030 plan and funding from Bpifrance. Private financing: This includes venture capital, development capital, business angels, and crowdfunding. These funding sources are often sought by startups and SMEs in the growth phase. Blended financing: These solutions combine the advantages of public and private financing. Examples include participatory loans or repayable advances.

What are the three types of assistance available to new business owners?

The founder of an innovative company can take advantage of three main types of financial assistance to fund their project. 1. Tax incentives: These programs help reduce the amount of taxes owed. They include the Research Tax Credit (CIR), the Innovation Tax Credit (CII), and the Young Innovative Company (JEI) status. 2. Direct aid: This type of aid is generally provided in the form of grants. They are awarded by public agencies such as Bpifrance, ADEME, or Regional Councils. 3. Indirect aid: These are loans at preferential rates or repayable advances. This aid is often reserved for high-potential projects and can represent a significant source of funding.
